Module 3

Module 3 is even more complex in content and context than Module 2 and seeks to prepare systematic reviewers to conduct reviews of experimental, descriptive, diagnostic and prognostic studies using the JBI-CReMS and JBI-MAStARI software. http://ims.cochrane.org/revman/download

    The Module consists of ten (10) sessions:

    Session 1: The Critical Appraisal of Studies;

    Session 2: Appraising RCTs and CCTs;

    Session 3: Appraising observational Studies;

    Session 4: Study data and data extraction and protocol development;

    Session 5: Data analysis and meta-analysis;

    Session 6: Appraisal extraction and synthesis using JBI MAStARI;

    Session 7: Systematic review of diagnostic and prognostic studies;

    Session 8: Protocol Development;

    Session 9: Assessment; and

    Session 10: Protocol Presentations

Reading 7
Now turn to Reading 7 - the CSRTP Module 3 Study Guide - and read through the whole study guide (Sessions 1 – 15); then turn to the Power Points for Sessions 1 - 10 and work through them.

You will note that there is a wide range of complex concepts that require clear explanations. It is important that trainers arte familiar with these concepts and are able to explain them when CSRTP participants seek clarification. At this point in the course, you need to spend some time investoigating these concepts fully.

activity 7
Now set aside some time to read a number of required Texts and Readings. Read:

1. Text 4: The JBI Reviewers Manual;

2. Text 7: Synthesising Evidence of the Effects of Interventions;

3. Text 8: Synthesising Evidence of Risk; and

4. Text 9: Synthesising Evidence of Diagnostic Accuracy

Take detailed notes as you read.

This Module requires a great deal of background knowledge on the part of the trainer and these supporting Texts are designed to provide this.

activity 8
Now work through Group Work 4 in Reading 8: The CSRTP Module 3 Workbook.

You will need to log on to JBI-MAStARI for this activity, and then follow the instructions set out in the Module 1 Workbook.

When you have completed Activity 8, you will – we hope - have thoroughly familiarized yourself with Module 3 of the CSRTP and be able to present any of the nine sessions in the Module in Part 2 of the Train-the-Trainer program.
