Module 5

Module 5 is designed to provide participants with skills in the systematic review of evidence generated by economic studies. The Module consists of nine (9) sessions:

Session 1: Introduction to the systematic review of economic evidence and to developing a search strategy

Session 2, 3 and 4: Critical appraisal of economic evaluation evidence

    Session 5: Re-cap

Session 6: Data extraction for a systematic review of economic evaluation evidence

Session 7: Data Synthesis and Results Reporting in the systematic review of economic evaluation evidence

    Session 8: JBI-ACTUARI software trial

    Session 9: Final session

Reading 9
Now turn to Reading 13 - the CSRTP Module 5 Study Guide - and read through the whole study guide (Sessions 1 – 9); then turn to the Power Points for Sessions 1 - 9 and work through them.

You will note that some complex concepts surrounding economic synthesis require clear explanations. It is important that trainers are familiar with these concepts and are able to explain them when CSRTP participants seek clarification. At this point in the course, you need to spend some time investigating these concepts fully.

Activity 9
Now set aside some time to read Text 10: Synthesising Evidence of Cost, Utility and Technology

Take detailed notes as you read.

This Module requires a great deal of background knowledge on the part of the trainer and this supporting Text is designed to provide this.

Activity 10
Now work through Group Work 1-4 in Reading 14: The CSRTP Module 5 Workbook.

You will need to:
1. access the two papers - Berger K, Fischer T Szucs T. Cost-effectiveness analysis of paclitaxel and cisplatin versus cyclophosphamide and cisplatin as first-line therapy in advanced ovarian cancer. A European perspective. Eur J Cancer 1998;34:1894–901 and Covens A, Boucher S, Roche K, Macdonald M, Pettitt D, Jolain B, et al. Is paclitaxel and cisplatin a cost- effective first-line therapy for advanced ovarian carcinoma? Cancer 1996;77:2086–91;

2. log on to JBI-ACTUARI for this activity; and then follow the instructions set out in the Module 5 Workbook.

When you have completed Activity 10, you will – we hope - have thoroughly familiarized yourself with Module 5 of the CSRTP and be able to present any of the nine sessions in the Module in Part 2 of the Train-the-Trainer program.
