Cochrane Nursing Care Network

Evidence Transfer Program

The ETP consists of two components:

[-] Review Summaries

One of the objectives of the CNCN is to disseminate summaries of nursing-care-relevant Cochrane Reviews. We are currently in discussions with a wide range of international journals that are interested in producing a regular ‘Cochrane Corner’ column. The purpose of these columns is to increase the awareness of Cochrane Reviews amongst nurses and others involved in nursing are and to encourage readers to both access the full review via the Cochrane Library and to facilitate the transfer of the findings into practice.
The target audience is, of course, nurses and others involved in decision making at the point of care as well as teachers and leaders – thus, the CNCN will focus strongly on presenting information in ways that are accessible to this group and will therefore involve members of the CNCN with experience and expertise in the specific specialty area.  We are calling on our members to participate in this exciting initiative.

CNCN members are required to:

  • Search the Cochrane Library for recent reviews relevant to nursing care (and the specific journal of interest);
  • Write up a short summary of the review using a standardised template; and
  • Submit it to the CNCN and if required undertake any edits

The CNCN will act as receiving editors and check each column before final submission to a journal and will coordinate the overall program.

CNCN submits summary to the Journal

Each author will be acknowledged for their contribution in the target journal as well as on the CNCN website. Authors will not be remunerated for their work. Over 100 CNCN members have already volunteered to be involved in this project and the list is growing.

[-] Podcasts

A second component of the ETP is to develop podcasts of nursing-related Cochrane reviews. A podcast is an audio recording of a summary of a Cochrane review. Podcasts have been available in the Cochrane Library since 2008 and are very popular. Please visit at http://www.cochrane.org/podcasts/index.html They usually last 3-4 minutes and can include a summary of a Cochrane review, an interview with the author/s or follow a theme on topics of interest.

Dr Suzi Robertson Malt has volunteered to be the CNCN podcast editor. Suzi is an accomplished Nursing Leader (and a Cochrane Reviewer), with expertise in developing organisational systems and processes that support the translation of evidence into practice.

CNCN podcasts are either an overview of a review summary or a description of activities that are being undertaken by the CNCN and/or its associated nodes. To listen to a CNCN podcast click on the link below

  • Hear about the aims of the Nursing Care Clinical Trials Database Node by Co-Convenor Dr Lisa Hopp of the Indiana Centre for Evidence Based Nursing Practice Listen
  • Hear about the aims of the Fundamentals of Care Node by Co-Convenor Dr Suzi Roberston Malt of Sidra Medical and Research Center, Doha Qatar Listen
  • Hear about the aims of the Nursing Care Review Integration Node by Podcast Editor Dr Suzi Roberston Malt of Sidra Medical and Research Center, Doha Qatar Listen
  • Hear about the aims of the Nursing Care Traditional Chinese Node narrated by Podcast Editor Dr Suzi Roberston Malt of Sidra Medical and Research Center, Doha Qatar Listen

For the CNCN to contribute to developing podcasts we need a ‘pool’ of volunteers and expertise related to podcasting.
We are looking for volunteers to be involved in either:

  • Writing scripts for podcasts based on the review summaries that are developed
  • Delivering podcasts using a script
  • Translating the script and podcast into languages other than English OR
  • All of the above.
