Just as health professionals are consumers of research, so too are the individuals who use the health care system, their friends, family and carers. We are exposed to research evidence and information on a regular basis, but what does it all mean? As consumers of health care and research it is helpful to have a basic understanding of the research process and critical appraisal skills that provide a standard for evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of research studies rather than simply taking them at face value.
