Taipei training
Prof Alan Pearson and Craig Lockwood from JBI have returned from their trip to Taipei, where they conducted the Train the Trainer course for 14 participants. The training went very well, and Friday was spent listening to no less than 24 systematic review protocol presentations and providing feedback and constructive criticism.

Clinical Fellowship program presentations
JBI Clinical Fellows gave their presentations this morning and provided staff with a very interesting hour of information and ideas. All of the Fellows will be joining our alumni program.
New collaborating centre
The newest centre in JBI collaboration is the Japan Centre for Evidence Based Practice: Osaka University, Japan. Its director will be Prof Kiyoko Makimoto, and the centre will focus on systematic reviews and translation.
Recommended practice update
As a result of our Nodes' Expert Reference Groups (ERG) members' requests, several recommended practice sheets now include graphics! This includes charts and figures which will help to clarify the useful information included in the sheets.

ANF conference Wednesday
In partnership with JBI, the ANF will be hosting a conference on Wednesday 4 August at the Arts Gallery on North Terrace. The conference is themed ‘From discourse to practice: using evidence to optimise health outcomes’. Prof Alan Pearson AM and Craig Lockwood will both be attending and giving presentations. Craig Lockwood will present on practical ways of using evidence in practice while Prof Alan, together with Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) Executive Director Doris Grinspun, will address the reasons why evidence matters in nursing.

Projects completed
The Research team have recently completed two research projects for the RAH. The first is on ‘Identifying deteriorating patients’ while the second is on ‘Programs to decrease pressure on emergency departments’. Congratulations to the team on completing these reviews!
New centre
The newest centre to be approved is at Monash University in Melbourne. Director Professor Karen Francis and her team will be starting and looking after a new node on Chronic Disease Management. JBI looks forward to their contribution to the collaboration.
Masters intake
A new intake of Masters students began today and will be at the institute through next week.
SA Members Day
This year’s Members Day gave those who attended a good chance to get to know some of staff on a personal level. Attendees also expressed that they were happy to learn about some of the benefits included in their membership of which they were previously unaware.

Stephen Richards was elected unanimously as the postgraduate student representative to the School Collegial Board.

The Joanna Briggs Foundation was officially launched in Sydney on Monday with a ceremony at Admiralty House in Sydney. JBI-College of Nursing workshop a success!
The Joanna Briggs Institute and College of Nursing workshop in Sydney on Tuesday was a great success. The workshop was on "Role of qualitative evidence in evidence-based healthcare". 26 people attended the workshop and all gave positive feedback about the day-long course.
Clinical Fellows presentations
This week’s Fellows completed their implementation project proposal presentations today and provided JBI staff with a very interesting and engaging couple of hours in the Training Room. There were three clinical fellows from overseas (USA, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia).

PACES workshop
The recently concluded one-day PACES workshop received very good feedback from the participants. There were 10 participants from diverse clinical settings and aged care facilities, all interested in implementing best evidence into practice in their settings. Most notable feedback from the participants related to 'face-to-face PACES training'.
JBI External Event - Australasian Conference on Error in Medical Imaging
The Australian Patient Ssafety Foundation (APSF) is very excited to announce that the Australasian Conference on Error in Medical Imaging: Making Imaging Safer will take place in Sydney from 11-12th November 2010. The Conference will feature international and national speakers defining patient safety problems in Medical Imaging and proposing a way forward to improve the situation.

JBI Research Unit
To address safety and quality in developing countries, JBI research unit has been leading a multi- site collaborative patient safety research project titled “Engaging consumers in safety and quality in developing countries" in two hospitals in Sub-Saharan Africa – one in Tanzania and one in South Africa. This project was selected to receive a grant under the 2008-2009 Small Research Grants for Patient Safety programme of the World Health Organization.

JBI Clinical Fellowship Program - 2010April intake - Positive feedback from the Clinical Fellows
A group of five clinical fellows have successfully completed their week 1 intensive residency training program today at JBI headquarters in Adelaide. The clinical fellows presented their clinical audit implementation project proposals on diverse topics such as chronic disease management, maintenance and removal of intercostal catheters (ICCs), pain management in advanced cancer, physical restraints in aged care residential facilities and 'pig tail' drains management. There was a positive feedback from the participants on this program and were excited with the start to their projects.

New systematic review protocol
There is a new systematic review protocol published on JBI website. This systematic review protocol is an integrative study of intervention strategies that support self-care activities across chronic disease/disability groupings. This systematic review protocol was developed by the Queens Joanna Briggs Collaboration (QJBC) in Canada.
JBI RAH Clinical Fellowship Program
JBI received exceptional feedback from the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) after their group of Clinical Fellows completed the Clinical Fellowship Program at JBI last week. The RAH was impressed with this training program which involved two intensive training residency weeks and an implementation project at the fellows' work place.
CSR training in Switzerland
The recently held JBI CSR training program in Switzerland was a success. Craig Lockwood and Ed Aromataris from JBI reported their teaching experience as fantastic with a great training group of 15 mixed Allied Health professionals.

Western Australian Centre for Evidence Based Nursing and Midwifery (WACEBNM) biennial one day conference
The WACEBNM’s biennial one day conference was held on 12th February, 2010. The keynote speaker was Prof Alison Kitson, Head, Discipline of Nursing, University of Adelaide and Director, Centre for Evidence Based Practice, South Australia. Prof Kitson’s presentation, Beyond guidelines, was very well received. The other plenary topics were Tailoring interventions for clinical application: working in consultation and Interdisciplinary evidence based research: Where ‘No Man is an Island’.
A successful innovation this year was the addition of a primary research section. Two holders of research grants from The WA Nurses Memorial Charitable Trust, a sponsor of the conference, presented their completed studies. Concurrent workshops were held in the morning and afternoon, enabling delegates to attend two workshops of their choice. The topics addressed were: Searching the literature for evidence, Writing evidence based clinical protocols, Using clinical audit to improve outcomes, and Evidence informed wound management.
Training at Joanna Briggs Institute Collaborating Centre Thames Valley University, UK
The Joanna Briggs Institute Collaborating Centre at Thames Valley University in UK provided training to key staff from Portugal and Denmark on a Systematic Review course from 2nd to 5th February 2010.The course was attended by 6 representatives from the Health Sciences Research Unit, Coimbra’s Nursing School in Portugal and 4 representatives from the National Danish Clearinghouse for Nursing, which is part of The Danish Nursing Society and funded by the hospitals in Denmark. Feedback from the participants suggested that the course went well, was extremely informative and gave the them an opportunity to develop relationships with Thames Valley University, Joanna Briggs Institute and with each other.

Knowledge Translation workshops - Centre for Evidence-based Practice South Australia (Nursing): CEPSA
CEPSA is running some Knowledge Translation workshops that offers participants the opportunity to examine current evidence relating to implementing EBP and to become familiar with the PARIHS framework as a tool to facilitate successful implementation. This program examines and explores the framework and enables participants to develop understandings of it and collaboratively create ideas and plans for use in their own work contexts. It is particularly relevant for those involved in quality improvement, safety and quality, and clinical practice improvement programs in healthcare organisations. Professor Robin Watts and Associate Professor Lesley Long honoured on Australia Day as a Member of the Order of Australia
We would like to congratulate Professor Robin Watts AM and Associate Professor Lesley Long AM who were honoured on Australia Day as a Member of the Order of Australia. Both Professor Watts and Associate Professor Long are members of the Joanna Briggs Committee of Management, along with Professor Alan Pearson AM, who was also recognised last week.
Professor Watts received her honour for service to nursing through the development of nurse education, promotion of evidence-based health care and the establishment of ethical research standards.
Associate Professor Long received her honour for service to medical administration, particularly in the area of nursing, to the education of nurses, and to clinical service planning.
Congratulations to all three who have also been integral to the development of the Institute over the last fourteen years

The 2009 JBI International Convention, Ripples to Revolution: From Bench to Bedside was a great success, attracting speakers and delegates from across the globe to Adelaide, South Australia. It started with a bang, with delegates saying the opening ceremony was one of the best and most unique they have ever seen. 1st Cochrane Nursing Care Network Symposium
The first CNCN Symposium was held on October 9th and 10th at the National University of Singapore. Over one hundred people attended the two day event in which some lively discussions were had. Guest speakers included Bryony Urquhart (Wiley-Blackwell), Steve McDonald and Sally Green (Australasian Cochrane Centre), and Pauline Tan (Singapore Ministry of Health). The inaugural meeting of the Joanna Briggs Foundation was held last week at the University of Adelaide. Those in attendance included Foundation Director Professor Judy Lumby along with Richard Aedy, Professor Gavin Brown, Professor Catherine Lumby, Kerry O’Brien, Professor Alan Pearson, Dr Josephine Tiddy and special guest Robyn Brown, Director of Development and Alumni at the University of Adelaide. JBI in Taiwan
The recent visit of JBI staff to Taiwan was very successful. The team conducted Comprehensive Systematic Review Training and Train the Trainer Programs with 65 health professionals from across disciplines and met with the Minister for Health. It is anticipated that three or four new centres may open in Taiwan as a result. JBI Comprehensive Systematic Review Training in USA
A recent education and training trip to the USA meant time in the University Of California San Francisco School Of Nursing where Prof Alan Pearson and Craig Lockwood provided systematic review training to staff of the Collaborative Alliance for Nursing Outcomes (CALNOC) and their partners, including Veterans Affairs and the Kaiser Permanente Group. Dr Nancy Donaldson is the CALNOC Co-Principal Investigator, and works with a small but dynamic team who aim to advance global patient care safety, outcomes and performance measurement efforts – and now, to conduct systematic reviews. The group developed some excellent protocols related to medication safety, vaccination programs, pain assessment, failure to rescue as well as the impact of unit level staffing on patient outcomes and gave positive feedback on the training program.
Following this very positive and busy week in San Francisco, the focus moved to Dallas/Fort Worth where the train the trainer program was run at Texas Christian University, supported by Dr Paulette Burns (Dean) and Dr Susan Weeks. TCU provided the ideal training environment, and the three existing collaborating centres in the USA (New Jersey, Oklahoma and Indiana) attended and contributed to the training.
JBI in Taiwan
Dr Catalin Tufanaru and Kirsten Macaitis are in Taiwan this week conducting Comprehensive Systematic Review training, and we look forward to hearing some exciting updates when they return.
Academic Visit
Professor Shaomei Shang, Director of the Department of Fundamental Nursing at Peking University visited the Institute this week. Professor Shang spent time with the Executive team at JBI and we look forward to possible future collaborations.
'Clinical Trials' course
This course will be conducted on 8-9 September 2009 and it aims to equip participants with basic skills and knowledge for designing clinical trials and understanding the different phases of clinical trials. For more details and registration, please click here.
Visiting scholar
Titan Ligita has been visiting the Institute for the last six weeks. Titan is a Health Training Officer at the Centre for Health Training in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. During her stay she participated in several JBI Education and Training courses and worked closely with JBI staff to develop a protocol for her own systematic review which she presented to staff this week. It has been a pleasure to have Titan with us and we have learned as much from her as we hope she has from us!

JBI in the USA
Professor Alan Pearson and Craig Lockwood spent last week in San Francisco conducting Comprehensive Systematic Review training and are currently in Texas conducting Train the Trainer. These programs aim to teach participants how to conduct both qualitative and quantitative systematic reviews and to teach others. We always enjoy meeting colleagues around the world and having an opportunity to share experiences and knowledge.

Mental Health node

Ambassador visit
The Ambassador of Romania, His Excellency Dr Mihai Stuparu visited the Institute this week. Dr Stuparu, who has extensive international experience, met with the Executive team of the Institute on Friday the 7th August. Discussions included a brief history of the Institute and the Romanian Centre for Evidence Based Public Health: a collaborating centre of the Joanna Briggs Institute as well as future opportunities for promoting and supporting evidence-based healthcare in Romania. His wife, Cristina Stuparu, and Jen Zerner, Protocol Officer, Department Premier & Cabinet, South Australian Government, accompanied Dr Stuparu.
International Committee of Directors meeting
Regional teleconference meetings were held this week with the Joanna Briggs Collaboration Committee of Directors. The meetings were very positive and we look forward to seeing everyone in person this November at the JBI International Convention, Ripples to Revolution: From Bench to Bedside in Adelaide.

The National Australian conference on evidence based clinical leadership was a great success! Delegates enjoyed a unique opportunity to hear some outstanding keynote speakers, network and share their experiences of clinical leadership and evidence based practice in an exquisite venue.

We would like to welcome Elaine McCall as the interim Director of the Centre for Evidence Based Health Care Aotearoa, New Zealand. She takes over from Dr Bridie Kent who has moved to Deakin University in Victoria, Australia, who we thank for her contribution to the Collaboration.
The Australian Centre for Rural and Remote Evidence Based Practice, based in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia is pleased to welcome Professor Cath Rogers-Clark as the new Director. Judy March will remain with the Centre as Deputy Director.
Dr Petra Brysiewicz is the new Director of the South African Centre for Evidence Based Nursing and Midwifery in Durban.
Nursing honour in Spain
Dr Teresa Moreno Casbas, Director of the Spanish Centre for Evidence Based Nursing has been appointed, as a result of competitive examination, as an "Investigador Títular de Organismos Publicos de Investigación. Especialidad: Servicios de Salud y evaluación tecnologías sanitarias" (Research Leader for Public Research Institutions in the Field of Health Services Research and Health Technology Assessment). Dr Casbas is the first nurse in Spain to achieve this and this is an important breakthrough for nursing research in Spain. Dr Casbas will continue to lead our Centre in Spain – and will join a number of our other Directors (such as Professor Rhonda Griffiths and Professor Judy Lumby) who have been recognised by their home nations for their outstanding contribution to health care and research.

Nightingale Seminar, Kings College, London
Professor Alan Pearson, Founder and Executive Director of the Joanna Briggs Institute and Professor of Evidence Based Healthcare at the University of Adelaide, will give the Nightingale Seminar on Monday the 9th March 2009.
Professor Pearson will discuss the Australian Government’s 1986 decision to transfer nursing education to the university sector, its impact on the recruitment and retention of nurses and the quality of patient care.

The event was held in the pristine and gorgeous Spanish city of Cordoba, where 800 delegates from all over the world attended a very informative and enjoyable event. 6th Biennial Joanna Briggs Colloquium in association with the 12th International Nursing Research Conference - Cordoba, SPAIN
Following the Colloquium, the Joanna Briggs Collaboration Committee of Directors travelled to the stunning city of Seville for their annual face-to-face meeting. There was much healthy debate at the three day meeting, which was followed by an interesting Director’s challenge and formal dinner that included traditional Spanish dancing and several awards to recognise outstanding centre performance.
